this hike is so fun!! the kayak along the river is so beautiful and the hike is not too strenuous, just slippery in parts. it’s really fun to cross the river and walk among the rocks and roots. the waterfall is BEAUTIFUL and so worth it. we left on the paddle at 7:15 and the waterfall was not crowded.

We did the self guided kayak tour. Took 1 hard hour of rowing to get to the trailhead, and 1 hour of hard rowing back. Because we left in the morning, (8am), we rowed against the current on the way to trail, but then the tide rose so we rowed against the current on the way back. Current is slow, so it is manageable, but it does take some consistent effort. The hike itself was really cool. Definitely some somewhat sketchy parts for the grandparents in our group. But they are very capable/athleltic for old people, so they handled the slippery/steep parts well. The falls at the end, were cool. No jaw dropping, water was fun to swim in, but really cold. We didn't have long to stay since we had to get back to get our kayaks turned in on time.
Note: we took our 16 month old in the kayak and on the hike. He did great. Tour guide had a life vest and we had a carry pack for the hike. I believe the rule is they need to be 2 to do the kayak, I think we said he was 2, and nobody asked. It really just comes down to your comfort level with taking an infant/toddler on the water.

We did self guided kayaks to get there. 2 miles one way plus a short 2.2 mile hike (round trip). Also gave us a chance to do the fern grotto while we were there.

Wear water shoes and you will be thankful. There is a water crossing and you WILL get wet.

So pretty! Highly recommend.

You do have to kayak for about 2 miles to get to the trailhead. We didn't use a guide and it was very easy to find. Plus, there are so many guided tours that you can just follow them too.

The trail itself is easy. Mostly walking but it is muddy and does have portions where you will be in water up to thigh height.

The fall itself is beautiful. Cold and refreshing to swim in. It is a small area so mostly just soaking in the cold water.

Really pretty hike with a gorgeous waterfall and pool at the end. The pool beneath the waterfall is very cold, I only waded in about halfway. I recommend going early- the trailhead gets very packed with kayaks and you'll do a lot of stopping to let folks pass on the trail by midday. Much of the trail has a boardwalk however there are some stream crossings as well as a short but steep climb up a rock/mud wall before the falls. We did the hike in sport sandals, they worked great. A hiking stick is nice to have.

Absolute must! Great way to spend around 3-4 hours! You can join a tour but it is SUPER easy to go on your own.

Rent a kayak and start from Wailua State Park Boat Ramp (there is plenty of parking, bathrooms, and an outdoor shower). DO NOT go from the “google” trailhead off Kuamoo Rd…this is closed.

We heard to start early, but we went on a Monday in November around 930am and it wasn’t too busy. Easy 2 mile kayak up the river (30-45 min), about 30 minute hike (flat, easy, and some walking on platforms) to the waterfall (gorgeous waterfall to hang out and have a snack/lunch), 30 min hike back, and 45 mi. Kayak back (slightly harder depending on wind/current).

If you have time…stay left at the fork in the river kayaking… it goes to past Fern Grotto for another (30-40 min round trip). Beautiful remote kayaking. Really enjoyed this kayak/hike and exploring Kauai’s beauty.

This was a top highlight of our time on Kauai. Kayaking to the trail head is beautiful and relaxing, and the hike was invigorating. You cross the river twice by wading through, and there are pathways to cross the back half. The waterfall itself is a spectacular sight!

A must do! It rained on us during our hike and it was absolutely wonderful. The rain was a very pleasant surprise and actually made the hike better. The falls are amazing, as you probably already know. The paddle up river and back for some may be a bit much, but we found it rather enjoyable. 2 adults, three kids, we all survived to tell the tale! lol. Enjoy the journey, connect with mama kaua’i and make sure to not leave anything behind.
