Shoe shopping has really changed since I seriously bought a pair of shoes at a shoe store. Now you are pretty much on your own. Measuring, choosing a shoe, checking length and width, and all the shoe choosing questions. They more or less are there to get shoes for you from the back.

I received the worst subtle racism I've received in years at the Huffman location today. I walked in, it was very busy, lots of people but also lots of people to help. I waited to take my turn to look at the xtratufs seeing a pair I wanted. I watched and waited as others before me were helped, then when it was my turn to be helped, not a sales person in sight. A gentleman walked into the store after I'd waited 10 mins and immediately was acknowledged and received assistance, fine, ok, "he's looking at the men's" I told myself. I said, "excuse me" very politely to an associate, she ignored me, and started speaking with some other lady customers about what they were going to have for lunch, ok, maybe she knows them. A lady came in after that, asked how long I'd been waiting, which at the time was around 20 mins. The pair I had wanted was tried on by someone else so I went to the counter and got them from the male associate at the counter, he offered no further assistance, didn't ask if I wanted another pair, nothing. The gal who was behind me waiting for xtratufs got immediate assistance as soon as I walked away. She asked me as I was looking around the store if I had actually received any help, because SHE had just been helped. She gave me a knowing look, and said, "I know this store is busy, but it's not THAT busy".
I walked around for a small amount of time longer trying to locate socks, then went to the checkout, and this is where the REAL racism kicked in. I handed everything to the lady at the cash register, she asked me if I had shopped with them before, I hadn't, so she got my phone number. She asked the female associate who ignored me if she had helped me, she replied no, with a side look to me. She asked if the gentleman associate had helped me, to which I replied no, as he had not. SHE asked if I wanted my box, I did not, so she took the boots out. She checked the inside of the boots once there, and then once again after I had paid, coming around the register to do so. I stated I wanted to wear the boots out, and while seated with one boot on my foot, she checks the unworn boot AGAIN, saying she thought SHE left something in it, after having checked them TWICE already.
I wore regular alaska attire today, clean jeans, a hoodie, and pompom hat. I was not the only person wearing boots out of the store, but I was the ONLY patron being ignored, then assessed again and again.

Felt like I wasn’t welcomed there, everyone was being treated super nice and I just wasn’t receiving the same, and I happened to be the only person there that wasn’t white. I would understand if I was being a type of way but I was being nice and understanding. But unfortunately the whole interaction was not enjoyable and I won’t be going back.

I am a loyal costumer when it comes to certain items. Shoes/boots are one of these items. I had a local place here in town that I shopped exclusively at, mostly because I valued highly the customer service at this place. The problem, there wasn't anything business professional enough that fit my feet as they are wide. A friend suggested trying the walking store as he knew the business very well. It took several months and a new pair of shoes that didn't fit for me to finally give them a chance. I couldn't be more satisfied. I found a pair of shoes that were exactly what I was looking for. They looked professional and fit my wide feet much easier than any other place I have tried. The service was equally as impressive as the other shop that I have used. I will now be going to The Alaska Walking Store first to look for quality footwear. I would have given a 10/10 if it were an option. Thank you Troy for the excellent customer service and satisfaction!

I had a lovely experience at the Huffman store yesterday. I have very touchy feet. Everything gives me blisters. But the sandals i bought, after putting the poor salesperson through the ringer trying on every other pair and asking an encyclopedia's worth of questions, are by far the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. And I believe shoes are one item worth paying a premium for, so it's not like my others are garbage. These are just that fantastic.

Thanks!

When I entered the store with bag containing a pair of shoes I had bought the week before and wanted to return at 11:05 on Saturday morning (they open at 11:00 and I believe I was the first customer) all three gals working there quickly walked into the storage room in the back. They all came out 20 seconds later and asked what they could do for me. Without going into all the details, the clerks were rude, unpleasant and lacked any customer service training. I will never shop there again and for what the shoes cost, they need customer service desperately as well as having a pleasant demeanor.
