first come first serve dog-friendly campgrounds with the friendliest park rangers! there's free wifi at the pantoll ranger station and they also sell firewood for $10 per bundle. we stayed at campsite 6 and loved it! the only downside was being able to see/hear the parking lot down below us. the sites on top of the hill (site 11) seem like the better choice if you want to be more secluded and farther away from the parking lot. fresh, potable drinking water spouts are available near all sites and the campsite itself is in a great location - close to several hiking trails. come early on a friday morning if you plan to stay for the weekend! early as in before 9am if you want to claim a spot.

We camped January 1 and 2. No problem getting a spot at 3pm . Ranger was very nice. Parking can be tricky but we got a spot right away. We camped in #8. Did a day hike toward on easy grade trail toward boot jack. Great views of the bay. Did a night hike to same spot to see the lights. Next day hiked dipsea Matt Davis trail loop, fantastic.

Great camping location that is surrounded by many trails. This campground is first come first serve. There are 16 campgrounds with plenty of space from each other. There is one handicap spot very close to the parking lot. You leave your car in the parking lot and move your camping gear to the camping spot, it is close by, unless you pick the campground that is high up the hill and want to be more secluded. The range office is there too so you can pay and ask questions to the officer. You can buy wood there (if I remember, the office is closed on Tuesday, call to make sure). There are 4 clean restrooms (flushable toilet, no shower head). The individual campground space is also great...it has flat surface to place your tent, one big fire pit, one grilling station, locker to store things (you need to bring your own lock), a picnic bench and plenty of room within your camping site.
Campgrounds are clean and surrounded by tall trees. It is beautiful to wake up to birds chirping and sunlight in the morning. It is quiet at night...I went during the week days.
I would definitely go back and camp at Pantoll Campgrounds.

If you have young kids and you want to take them somewhere for quick and easy camping trip, Pantoll Campground is a great choice. It's not far from the Hwy 101 in Marin County but you leave the city behind as you drive up Mt. Tam and the scenery changes quickly. This spot is popular so it's a great choice for a last minute weeknight in the summer or weekend in the winter. It's also nearby the coast and some great hiking trails on Mt. Tam. NOTE - it's a hillside campground and you may have to schlep your stuff up the hill to your campsite. Enjoy!

Beautiful campground! We came at 12 and got to pick from all the campsites. We were the only ones here for most of our stay. There are amazing hiking trails right off of the campground. The only thing is It was super windy but that was because a storm was coming.

Beautiful. First come first served only (no reservations), so make sure you have a backup plan for just in case you aren't lucky enough to score a spot (Bootjack Campground is nearby just a few minutes down the road, also first come only; and Samuel P Taylor State Park is not too terribly far away). If you want predictable weather and warm sunny skies camping, or aren't prepared for wet weather camping (including spring or summertime), you should probably look elsewhere. If you enjoy the often mercurial coastal weather and can appreciate the "fog river rain," you'll love it here (sometimes it's pretty hot and dry during the day, it can quickly morph to wet and foggy, and then back again... and even if the forecast says it's going to be clear that night, it can change quickly and sometimes the campground still gets bathed in what I can only describe as rain which drips down from the trees due to how thick the fog can roll in at times. It might be seriously damp and basically as if it's raining under the trees, while in the parking lot it is still a thick river a fog but otherwise not quite as "wet"). Otherworldly, ethereal, lovely, peaceful. If you do end up with a clear night, the stars are just gorgeous up here. But, don't hate on the fog- it's an experience! I seriously love this campground. There is one handicapped accessible campsite which is held until 5 pm every day, right next to the bathroom and parking lot, and another site which is hike-in/bike-in only (i.e. you cannot book that site if you arrive in a car or other vehicle, it is only allowed to be reserved by hikers/backpackers/cyclists). Lots of trails go through or right next to the campground and parking lot, so there are plenty of day hikes and cool things to see and explore all around Mt. Tamalpais and the watershed. The only reason I'm taking away a star is because I really wish you could reserve spots here, or I wish at least one or two of the campsites were able to be reserved in advance. The inability to reserve doesn't detract from the awesomeness, it's just a caveat to be aware of before you make the drive.

Clean and well-maintained campground area. There is a parking fee and camping fee, both payable at the well-stacked ranger station. The station also gives out free maps of the surrounding region and also sells firewood for campers. There is even free wifi access on the ranger station as well.
