This is the Wildlife Management Area, NOT the National Recreation Area with established campgrounds, picnic areas, & grassy beach.

If you enjoy primitive camping, hiking along Broad River, appreciating old homesteads & cemeteries, this is a welcome change of pace.

Word of warning - roads can be rough after a heavy rain, so take it slow. The roads have multiple names - ie FS 87 is also Old Guard Camp Road AND Sellers Road. The check-in station had maps when I visited, but you would be prudent to print it out in advance.

(Free!) Campsites are not on map, despite what it says, just drive around and you will find some up high with beautiful sunrise views, or along a stream. Bring your own water, and pack your trash out - all of It!

No bear activity per game warden, but heard fox nearby, saw lots of deer, turkey, crawfish, evidence of beaver and hogs.

You can find info about the Broad River hiking trail on Georgia Trails <.> com. It is 3.8 miles. Lock on cell phone GPS BEFORE entering WMA as signal is sketchy and finding trailhead is challenging. I recommend starting at northern end - the waterfalls are in the first mile or so, beyond that, some steep drop offs but only about 400ft of elevation. If you don't have 2 cars, you have to out and back. Although the southern end, aka Farmers Bottom, does have a fair amount of fishermen, but it is hit/miss.

Also, there are lots of informative plaquards that detail history of the homesteads there going back to the 1830s. Families have included sketches of the homes, interesting artifacts like permit for a whiskey still (and map to visit the remains), graves, and syrup mills.

The people who manage the campsite was very helpful and friendly. We had a great time, and made some wonderful memories! Plus the grocery store was 15 minutes away, to help us get all the things we forgot to pack.

Beautiful area for hiking, exploring, and offroading. Lots of unmarked hidden trails and campsites. There are things here like tabor falls and romans den, a large waterfall drop and an old man made cave someone used as a house. I was unsuccessful finding either of these things, but I only had a few hours to drive around it all. It isn't super easy hiking, you have to look to find what your looking for. There are lots of hidden roads but some of them have been blocked off or have fallen apart. We started the day at chenocetah mountain and ended it at curahee mountain. This is a great area to go offroading or just get away from the busy world for a while.
