It’s a small parking lot, maybe 7-8 cars. I did the loop counterclockwise.
I came across my first bison at first light just ambling along. I then enjoyed a beautiful sunrise. As I came atop a rise there was a bison about 200 yards away walking down the trail towards me. I scooted off about 100 yards into some trees. The bison was not in any hurry and stopped to rub against the trail marker post. The next bison was lying about 50 yards off the trail and didn’t care. I just moseyed down the trail. There were several Prairie Dog communities all along this section of the trail.
My return trip through the canyon was beautiful. It was lush and had a nice creek. I did not meet any bison in the canyon this time.

Trail is super easy, you are hiking through a nice prairie on the lookout point trail. Centennial trail is super great and winds through a cool canyon. I would recommend combining them into a loop. Wind caves speciality is not hiking, so I am not going to rave about this one. Met some awesome friends on the trail though!

TUE 15apr2025 morning, did a hike of "Centennial Trail, and Lookout Point" loop; a fun walk .. seeing Prairie Dogs, scenic greens, blue sky and white clouds. After walking thru/pass a few "boulders" beside the trail, when i turned to see the "boulders", i was shocked that the "boulders" are BISONS .. 😅 So i quick-paced walked away from these BISONS (who pretty much ignored my presence) ..

This a beautiful trail with prairie dogs and bison. There are some areas in the shade, but not much - so expect to get hot. The bison like hanging around the trails where there are water crossings, so be ready to have to go off trail to safely pass them. Overall it’s good, but that prairie sun will drain you.

We took Lookout trail out & Centenial on return route back. Started off strolling through peaceful meadow with plenty of prarie dogs, trekked through wooded sections, and crossed over at least 16 wooden foot bridges to pass over the Beaver creek that ran alongside the trail for at least 2-miles. Saw one buffalo resting off the trail, but otherwise, animal sighting was low. Spotted the cave by the canyon section, which was pretty neat to see & hear the rushing water within it while standing across the creek bed! Beautiful scenery and moderately easy hike; we enjoyed it!

So many prairie dogs and beautiful views for miles. 'easy' half of the 5 mile loop from the parking lot trail head. Good out and back for a less strenuous/less poison ivy walk.

We used AllTrails and hiked clockwise - no bison seen but LOTS of prairie dogs. The trail really is lovely BUT - soooooo much poison ivy. Do not wear shorts or sandals, especially if you are allergic. No bathroom at this trail head. Otherwise highly recommended!

We had a great time exploring this trail, the first half is definitely prairie dog City and the second half is a mix of pretty easy hills and stream crossings. Didn't see any buffalo up close which is okay with me, but it was a beautiful view because of the spring season.
