A great drive (8.4 miles from the Sattelite tracking stations to the campgrounds. All the signs say 4x4 required but if it’s not raining too bad 2WD can make it. Takes about an hour traveling at a leisurely pace, certain spots get a little tight so you have to go slow. It’s mainly a one lane road with the occasional turn off, uphill traffic has the right of way.

$2.50 for a One Day Use pass and $22.00 for a one night “Overnight Camping Pass”.

One of the better ways to see the beauty of Oahu.

Great place to ride or camp. Plenty of beginner trails and more advanced trails for the people who think they can. Bring a winch and a friend!

This is my favorite non beach/permit required place to camp on oahu. There are two areas up at peacock flats that you can check for camping permits. There is one porta potty like bathroom structure located at each area. There’s no water source. All camp areas come with their own covered picnic table. Well maintained area.

This campsite requires permit and 4wd car to access it. It’s about 7miles in. You have to go thru military gate so You cannot enter after 6pm daily and cannot enter before some time I forgot. I had a Subaru crosstrek and did awesome. The road can be muddy if it rains and have sharp turns followed by steep inclines so be prepared. The camp site does have a DLNR road that access it from the north side of the island and you can hike up the road, it’s about 3mi and access the camp site as well if you do not have a 4wd vehicle.

I’ve camped in site 5 and 4. I like site 4 because it’s down and away from the other sites so it’s more private and it’s well shaded in the morning while some of the others have beaming sun! A down side of site 4 is there’s a slight decline so when you are in your tent, depending on where u set up, can be a little slope down.

You can also keep driving up and access the trail head to Mokuleia Trail. A well maintained trail, partly shaded where you can walk up to the rim and look out over the valley. Easy basic about 1 mi in.

Nice quiet campgrounds. If you’re driving up you better have four-wheel drive and know how to use it. Bathroom facilities were clean and walking paths all over. The site is well maintained.

We drove up with our Subaru Outback this weekend. Definitely doable if you have any type of AWD or 4x4. Didn’t want to damage the car so being cautious took us about 2 hours to drive up to the campsite from the gate at the highway. Camp site is alright but I would not comeback unless I am an off-road enthusiast. Takes too long for an average campsite.

Good: off-roading, scenery, quiet, secluded, nature.
Bad: long time, average campsite, no amenities, lots of mosquitoes.

Beautiful ride. I would recommend a 4x4. We didn’t need it but if it rains I bet it is slick. We did need high clearance multiple times on the road. It is very steep and very narrow. Probably not for the inexperienced or faint of heart.
The views were beautiful the vegetation was beautiful. It was quiet and peaceful. We didn’t camp but I bet that would be a great experience.

Very nice and isolated camp ground. It’s a little difficult to get out to the campground but once you’re there it’s completely worth it.

I love the hike and often take my family or friends. If you are lucky you can catch a peacock or two. Definitely expect cow patties and or dog poo. Bring lots of sun protection and water.
