What a job these cats had! I couldn't imagine being in that 36' boat as I righted itself in the cold crashing of waves during a rescue. Beautiful design. It's just baffling that such a small propeller produces such power. And it's also weird to think that the boat has a third of the power of a modern commuter vehicle.

Such a cool place!!! So much history is kept inside the building, and the staff is helpful and knowledgeable. Come and look at the history of the area during the World War. I didn't even know that a submarine came from Japan with a plane on top, they surfaced, put the plane together and slung it off the sub. The quality of the equipment materials, not to mention the workmanship!! I didn't even mention the walking trails.

This is a small out of the way museum covering the brave Coast Guard members who have rescued people at sea near Port Orford from the 1930s to the 1960s. There are fascinating models of the coastline and boats both rescued and maintained by the Coast Guard, as well as a collection of interesting memorabilia from the men who were stationed there.

The docents on staff were knowledgeable and lovely to chat with. They took the time to answer all our questions and shared cool stories about the displays. This place is definitely worth the stop! The museum is totally free to visit.

We emailed ahead to request a tour in the off season, and the volunteers cheerfully accommodated us. The museum is full of fascinating artifacts and stories, with many hand-on activities for kids and adults.

Our kids and teens enjoyed trying to send a telegraph message in Morse code, and learning how to do various nautical knots. The docents told us so many interesting anecdotes and stories about the Coast Guard station’s work in the years of operation, and about the dangers of sailing the Oregon Coast.

The self-righting lifeboat was also a favorite.

This is a fantastic little museum. Unfortunately it is currently closed. The trails are still open and offer peaceful walks though the forrest and along cliffs with beautiful ocean views. There are several interpretive signs along the trail. There is a Porta-potty on site.

Awesome place to visit and learn about this historical place. Such a brave group of servicemen stood in this place. Topped off by the great guides manning the place at the time. It was an honor to visit.
