This trail takes you through a beautiful, lush forest with large trees, babbling streams, and good views of Pennock Island, parts of Ketchikan, and surrounding mountains. Most trail apps mark this as an easy trail although I’d say it’s more moderate . Be prepared for steep hills, tree roots, slippery rocks in some areas - sturdy footwear and hiking poles are recommended. I didn’t use hiking poles and got around fine but I could see how they could be useful. The best lookout point is closer to the South access of the trail - there’s a clearing with a short wood fence right next to the trail. You can walk to the South access of the trail from the cruise port, or the bus route also goes by both the North and South access points of the trail. We had a rental car so started at the UAS campus access point where you can park within the University’s parking lot.

I've hiked a lot of beautiful trails from Big Sur (California) to Colorado and other parts of Alaska and I'd put this one near the top of my list. What is so neat about this trail is how accessible it is. We took a free bus to the mall and then just walked up the hill to the trailhead. Despite it being close to the road, it feels much more excluded than you'd think.

I hiked it from north to south on 6/16/24. The trail tread was in great condition. Someone has done tremendous work (perhaps 20% of the entire length) creating stone steps and tread hardening.
Trail difficulty was, mmm, easy to moderate. There's a 150' - 200' elevation gain at the northern start until you get up to 'trail level'. Then it's just minor ups and downs (10' - 50') as you move along. Same at the southern end. There was some recent brush removal maintenance done. I saw none of whatever others experienced in having the trail be hard to follow. I found the trail very easy to follow the entire length.
It was dry the day I went but I was glad I brought my trekking poles. I can easily imagine some of the step rocks being slippery if wet. Also, there were some big step ups and step downs.
Nice little trail.

There are some points that the trail track is not so obvious. I thought I was on track but actually walked away the trail and down as much 50 yards where I could not go any further and had to climb back up, which was wet and tough. That took half an hour and had to be quite careful because there are quite some rotten trunks that would not support an adult’s weight. Overall is quite a pleasant hike with extremely fresh forest smell and a little bit of view down at the town and ships.

Gorgeous forest! **Part of the trail was "out" but if you have good mobility you can still pick your way through.

The signs say that this is an easy trail, but it isn't. It is beautiful, but the trail is rough and steep in places. Not a gentle stroll in the woods.
