I tried on several pairs of shoes and they didn't have the size in stock, but they gave me a coupon to order from their online store rugged outdoors. I picked it up in the store the next day, but I didn't love it, so I returned it painlessly and I got my online order refund really quickly. They were not able to order the shoes I wanted, but they were super nice and very knowledgable. I had to order the shoes I wanted online from a chain store, but I will definitely be back because I want to make sure that we can have a specialty store like this in Champaign, and while the selection isn't vast, they make up for that in a quality core selection that is well curated based on their expertise. Also, there was a large amount of clearance items that were much more affordable compared to the brand new items, so there is a great opportunity to get some deals on some really high quality items.

Champaign Outdoors is a great local business! The staff is kind and very knowledgeable about their products. The owners live the outdoor lifestyle, so you know they are offering the best quality products. The store is also involved in getting the community outdoors through hosting local hiking trips. So if you need some outdoor gear or you just need ideas for where you can go hiking, stop by the store. You won't be disappointed!

I don't know what CJ Sullivan is going on about. I love this store. Great gear and great people. They have tons of equipment. I am so happy my tent from here - they had a ton set up this summer and it was easy to compare and buy one. Champaign Surplus always has or gets what I need.
It's no coincidence that they are in business when all of the other shops in town have gone out of business.
OH, and they have so many Smartwool socks. I recently took a picture of their wall for a friend who was looking for Smartwool, since she had been getting them from Track and Trail (who went out of business). Check it out.

Quality outdoor gear. I appreciate that they have more than just Patagonia, Columbia, Cotopaxi, and other major name brands. All outdoor gear is expensive no matter which store you’re in, but at least they sell quality stuff and have friendly employees. I’ll be back to load up before my next winter adventure!

Champaigns outdoors has great brands, is local, and last I knew would match prices. I've been shopping here since they were Surplus. That said, today at 11:15 I went in to buy a silicon wedding band. My wife bought one there recently - and wanted me to get one too (we have other bands, but are active, and I am fearful of Jimmy Fallon-ing my finger - and wanted to get something to wear when I don't want to wear my band). Wandered into the store, towards shoes in the back. One nice sales associate asked if I needed help. I asked about the bands. He said they were by the front. I walked up, found them, started trying on the sizers. Two employees (a young man and a young woman) were at the front, never greeted me, never asked I needed help. I looked up at them several times, hoping to get their attention, so they would break off their conversation and ask if I needed help. I was there for several minutes. They never asked. I know I could have asked, but am too polite (and they were deep in a conversation about college). I walked out of the store without a purchase (will purchase online). I'll give this place another shot - but in this case, was a bit disappointed in the lack of customer service in a nearly empty store.

This is a nice local store to get outdoor gear. I’m used to places like REI and we’ll this is no REI it is very close. The have a good selection of brands for different outdoor activities. I was there yesterday for the sidewalk sale and would say it’s better than the REI garage sales I’ve been to. There was more selection at Champaign Outdoors sidewalk sale than in some of the REI garage sales. I’ve been following Champaign Outdoors on social media since moving to the area in August. I’ll definitely go back. I was disappointed that the people ringing me up didn’t mention anything about the Flatlanders club. I’ll probably join but getting info about it yesterday would have been great.

They were friendly and the coat is nice. They even price checked the coat for us, good stuff. 10/10 highly recommended for all your winter and hiking clothing needs.

Used to be 5 stars when it was Champaign Surplus. They downsized so much I don't see what about their inventory sets them apart from the bigbox stores anymore. Disappointing.
